Ready Steady Cook!
Fri 02 Oct 2015You may have been peeking through the cookery room window, watching the builders come and go, but at last they have gone and we have moved in. Healthy eating and cooking has a high profile within the curriculum, and our previous cookery room was impractical and falling apart. The cost of redevelopment has been partly funded by Friends of Fair Oak Infant School and through our school’s capital funds, which can only be spent on building maintenance and development. We now have a new cookery room which provides ample space for children to move safely around the room, an island which allows children to work around and all worktops and equipment at their height.
This week Year One has been busy cooking food linked to their class country. The paint had only just dried before Spain Class were cooking Spanish Omelette on Monday, Tuesday saw Denmark make cookies, Italy made pasta sauce and Germany has made Lebkuchen (spiced biscuits).
The children have all enjoyed their cooking experience, and it was great to see so many children trying the food they cooked. Year R and Two will also be cooking in the coming weeks and we are planning further cooks over the school year. They are also learning the important skill of washing up!

Harvest Festival
Tue 29 Sep 2015Harvest Festival
We welcomed Mr Keating from Eastleigh Basic Bank for our annual Harvest assembly. Each year group performed their own harvest song or poem and we talked about Mr Peart’s shopping and how farmers all around the world grow food we eat. We played a matching game, trying to match the shopping to pictures of it growing in the fields.
Thank you so much for all the donations, I am sure these will be very well received by local families.

Bikeability in Year One
Fri 25 Sep 2015Bikeability came to visit Year One on Thursday when children took part in Scooter Training. The children were taught to scoot to Pavilion Close and learnt about different ways to stay safe when using their scooters near the road. The children were really good at looking both ways before crossing a driveway and staying on the inside of the pavements. They also learnt a superpower saying needed when someone is in their way: ‘Excuse me please!’
Back at school the children participated in scooter games on the playground. They even had to scoot under a limbo pole!

All the children showed great team work, collaborating with each other and cheering each other on. We are pleased to report the final result was a draw between America Class and Durley, as they both won three of their games and drew with each other. Well done to all the children for taking part and thank you to MLT coaches for organising and encouraging the children as our referees. -

Fri 10 Jul 2015Following our Cricket Competition in school last month, eighteen Year 2 children were chosen to take part in a Cricket Master Class at the Ageas Bowl. Our cricket coach Adam Carty led the children through a series of activities to demonstrate their batting, bowling and fielding skills culminating in a mini game of cricket. The children were very fortunate to play on the cricket ground, watch some of the professional cricket players Hampshire v Sussex and have a tour of the grounds. The children excelled themselves showing superb cricket skills and Adam was very impressed. We are very proud of them. -
Year 2 Cooking
Fri 26 Jun 2015Year 2 went shopping to Country Market in Fair Oak. They went in the shop in small groups to buy ingredients. The shop keeper weighed the items and the children paid him. Some groups were able to give the exact money and to work out themselves how much change they should get!Back at school the children remembered to use the claw hold and the bridge hold to carefully chop the fruit and vegetables that they bought. The teachers were very impressed with the care the children took using the sharp knives and the collaboration that they saw.

Year R Pirate Day
Fri 26 Jun 2015Following our fabulous ‘Pirate Day’ on Monday, We are happy to report that all Year R children are now fully trained pirates! They know how to climb the rigging, swab the decks and even walk the plank! They were also very good at keeping the cannonballs on the ship. The highlight of course was finding some treasure, especially the authentic ‘hard tack’ biscuits which the pirates enjoyed with their milk, being a little too young still for rum rations! -
