  • Year 2 Civic Award Assembly

    Fri 27 Apr 2018

On Wednesday 19th April we were delighted to welcome the Mayor of Eastleigh to our school. She came to present our Year 2 children with their Civic Award certificate. The children who completed the Civic Award had been working on their citizenship skills by taking on responsibilities at home, at school and regularly participating in a club or hobby outside of school. The children were proud to shake hands with the Mayor, share their success with the adults who came to the assembly and take their certificates home. The children will be meeting to discuss and plan the final part of the award in the coming weeks and it will be completed later this term.

    Back to school for Mums.

Every year Fair Oak Infant School invite ‘Mums’ to come to school and spend time in class with the children. Over 350 came to school this year. The children and grown-ups had a wonderful time learning together.

“What a great activity – drawing fruit and vegetables. The children’s artistic skills are fantastic. Thank you for a lovely morning.” Year 2

In Year 1 clay was used to create models of the Titanic with their ‘All Aboard’ themed topic.

  • What is Quintessentially British?

    Mon 05 Mar 2018

In assembly today we have been thinking about what is Quintessentially British, as the Royal Mint have launched 26 new coins today with the Quintessentially British theme.

Below are the things we thought of. We also watched this video about the new 26 10p coins. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n1pcutKjTr0

Why not download the App, and start collecting. Who is going to be the first person to collect all 26? www.royalmint.com/coinhunt

  • Arts Week

    Fri 23 Feb 2018

    Year R

What a fabulous Arts Week we have had, at the same time launching our new topic, ‘How Does Your Garden Grow?’ Many thanks to those of you who supported the children’s learning by taking them to a garden centre and helping them to produce some learning for our classroom displays. If you are working on something still, it is not too late to send it in! Many thanks too for the seeds you have sent. All the children have planted seeds this week and are eagerly awaiting signs of growth!

At the beginning of the week, we learnt how to zoom in to take close up photos of flowers on the iPads. The results were amazing! The children have used their own photos during the week and explored using different media to represent their flowers.

    Year 1
In Year One this week, we have been getting very creative learning about our new topic ‘Rainforests’. It has been exciting launching our new topic in Arts Week. On Monday, we imagined we were visiting the rainforest. We thought of all the things we needed to pack. When we arrived, we spotted lots of different animals and types of plants! We looked through our binoculars and drew all the things we could see in the rainforest.

We have been very creative with clay this week. We practised ways to shape and mould clay and then we made an animal we would find in the layers of the rainforest. We finished our clay models by painting them with great care.

    Year 2

Year 2 have launched their new topic The Great Fire of London during Arts Week with a visit from Tree Tops Theatre Company. Ben took us on a journey to London in 1666.

Year 2 have also created a dance to represent the fire; mixed paint to create a range of orange using red and yellow; today, we had a workshop from Hampshire Music Service showing us how to play the steel pans.

  • Hockey Festival

    Wed 21 Feb 2018

Two teams of excited Year 2 children took part in a Hockey Festival at Wyvern with other Year 2 pupils from local schools on Wednesday this week. They played enthusiastically, collaborating in their teams, and cheering each other on too. We are pleased to announce they came joint second from nine teams playing. They thoroughly enjoyed this fun experience and we are very proud of them. Thank you to PH Sports who helped lead the event.

  • Pyramid Vocal Festival

    Tue 13 Feb 2018

On Wednesday a group of children from Year 2 took part in our annual Wyvern Pyramid Vocal Festival at Thornden Hall. The children learnt four songs on the theme of home before attending a workshop run by Edward Price from The BBC Singers. At the workshop they worked with nearly 200 children from local schools to create a performance. In the evening they performed to an audience of 400. They showed our school values of creativity, perseverance and collaboration to create a wonderful production.

“The festival had loads of people watching. It made me happy when I was singing because I like singing.” Danny

“The conductor was called Edward. He led the singing we had to watch him all the time because he was showing us how to sing by waving his hands.” Leo

“When I walked on to the stage and everybody was watching I was a little bit nervous. Once I started singing I forget my fear and I loved it.” Cassius

“When we got to Thornden Hall we listened to the senior choir sing it was fantastic.” Josh

  • New Laptops

    Fri 10 Nov 2017

During the Summer Holidays, our computers around school where upgraded and replaced, increasing the quantity in some areas and upgrading to interactive touch screens for the children. Over half term our computer network was upgraded further to Windows 10. This meant our new laptops/tablets could be delivered and installed. Over the last two weeks the children have been getting used to our new touchscreen laptops. We now have 32 within school, meaning every child within a class is able to work independently on their own laptop. Our IT Suite, which has now been removed, only had fifteen computers, meaning children often had to share or had a shorter amount of time learning in there if they were working individually on a computer.

A huge ‘THANK YOU’ to Friends of Fair Oak Infant School who have purchased and donated the laptops. This is a huge improvement in the technology we can use with the children, and now enables increased use within school, as well as enabling children to use the technology anywhere around school, both inside and out.

  • STEM Week

    Fri 03 Nov 2017

    Year R

As part of STEM week we have been busy planning and designing our own bags. We used these bags to collect some Autumn treasures on our walk around the campus. Thank you very much to everyone who helped. We hope you enjoyed it too! We used our school values to persevere and to reflect what we would do differently if we made a bag again. We explored different materials to see if they would be good for a bag in the rain or a bag to carry something heavy.

    Year 1

Year 1 have also been enjoying STEM week this week. We began by reading ‘The Lighthouse Keeper’s Lunch’ by Ronda and David The book introduced us to the lighthouse keeper and his wife. We learnt how every day the lighthouse keeper’s wife packed up his lunch into a basket and sent it from their cottage, purched high upon the cliff, down to the lighthouse using a rope and pulley. We set about creating a model of the lighthouse and cottage. We then learnt about pulleys, and even created an electrical circuit using a battery and lightbulb to make the lighthouse light up! The children have made some incredible working models which they are keen to display around the school.

    Year 2

This week we have all been Scientists, Engineers, Technologists and Mathematicians as part of our STEM week. The children have thought about many questions and experimented to find the answers. Winchester Science Museum and Planetarium visited with a mission to go into space. The children were asked to think about what would make a good spacesuit.

IBM visited and we were physicists and blasted off rockets, psychologists and tried to create a photo fit of Mr Peart and engineers to build bridges from spaghetti and marshmallows. The children were all amazed and engaged with every activity and had fun whilst learning all about different sciences. Thank you to Mr Coppen for organising the event and to his colleagues for supporting him.

  • Harvest Festival

    Fri 13 Oct 2017

We welcomed Mr Keating from Eastleigh Basic Banks to our Harvest Assemblies. He talked to the children about how all their donations of food will be used to help people living within our area. Each year group sang a harvest song or read a harvest poem. As part of Year One and Two’s Harvest Assembly, Mr Peart, with the help of some children and Mrs Carter, created a pizza. We looked at each ingredient within our pizza, finding out which country it was from and how many miles it had travelled to reach us. We talked about how farmers from around the World harvest their crops and what happens to our food before we consume it.

Year R had a separate Harvest Assembly, where the story of the Little Red Hen was retold.

On behalf of Eastleigh Basic Banks - Thank you for all your donations.
