  • Let's Talk PANTS

    Mon 18 Feb 2019

With the help of the friendly dinosaur Pantosaurus, at the NSPCC, talking PANTS is a simple way to teach your child how to stay safe from abuse. We use some of the materials within school, so why not share them with your child at home too.

  • STEM Week

    Fri 02 Nov 2018

This week has been our STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) Week. The children have been very busy demonstrating our School Values, whilst using STEM as a vehicle for learning this week. Our week began with us conducting two experiments in assembly and talking about how lots of jobs involve the use of STEM subjects.

    Year R

The children have had a fantastic time creating their own bags to carry their Autumn treasures. We have spent the week investigating and testing materials and the different elements a bag would need as well building their bags, choosing how to attach it together and adding handles and decorations. We then evaluated our bags and thought of ways that we could improve them if we were to make them again. A big thank you to all the parents that were able to help on our Autumn walk.

    Year 1

We have had a very exciting and enjoyable STEM week in Year One learning about different aspects of Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths.

First of all we used the story of Hansel and Gretel as our focus. We thought about and named all the 2D shapes that could be found in the sweet house. Then together we collaborated to explore the best sweets that could be used to build our own version of the Witch’s house. We were given lolly sticks and cocktail sticks to help us build our structures. It was great fun and hard not to eat our creations!

Mini Professors vistited us to run a fantastic workshop where we explored aspects of floating and sinking.

We also got to explore all the processes involved in making our own paper.

Next we used the story of Goldilocks and the Three Bears to help us investigate the vocabulary of tallest, shortest, shorter and taller than when comparing the characters.

In Science we helped Goldilocks to choose the best material to keep her porridge warm. We tested tin foil, cling film and paper and compared the temperature, before and after five minutes.

Finally, we read The Three Billy Goats Gruff. We needed to help some builders measure three new bridges for the goats. We used non-standard measures (cubes, paperclips, scissors…) to check our measurements after drawing outside in chalk.

The naughty troll then came to eat materials from our classroom. He didn’t like them being mixed so we had to be very careful to only feed him the same types (e.g. only plastic). We wanted to keep him happy!

    Year 2

Wow! This week Year 2 have enjoyed some fantastic experiences in our STEM week.

This week we were testing different material and different sized paper aeroplanes to see which one went the furthest. We found out that card aeroplanes went far because they have sturdy wings. We also investigated homemade hovercrafts to see if more air in the hovercraft made it go further.

As well, in Year 2, we tried to slow down gravity in our ‘world’s slowest marble run’. We used straws, lollypop sticks and Unifix to try to slow the marble down.

Year 2 have been lucky enough to be visited by IBM who gave us the opportunity to participate in different activities. Firstly, we were engineers, using marshmallows and spaghetti to try and build the strongest bridge. Then, we began our careers as rocket scientists, discovering which was a better fuel for our rockets, air by itself or water and air mixed together.

Finally, we were Criminal Psychologist trying to create a ‘photofit’ of Mr. Peart on the iPads.

Year 2 have had a fantastic STEM week demonstrating our School Values!

  • Tesco - Bags of Help!

    Sat 30 Jun 2018

Some of our classrooms are based in the old Victorian part of the school and have high ceilings, creating poor acoustic and reverberation levels, which along with background noise creates a poor learning environment.

We would like to improve the acoustics and reverberation levels within these classrooms by fitting acoustic panels to the ceiling. Recently, Hampshire County Council fitted such panels to one of our classrooms, which has made a huge difference, but, sadly, they will not install such panels in other classrooms.

The standard reverberation within classrooms is 0.8 seconds, this is how long sounds stay in a room after they first happen. Sounds stay in the room when they bounce off of desks or walls, making it harder to hear when sounds stay in the room. If many sounds do this at once, it can get very loud. In a classroom, it is therefore important to have a short reverberation time.

When classroom acoustics are bad it can cause problems with how children understand speech; read and spell; behave in the classroom; pay attention; concentrate and succeed in school. For these reasons, it is important to make the classrooms quieter for all children.

All children do better in a quieter classroom. It is even more important to have a quiet room if children have: a hearing loss in one or both ears; an ear infection or fluid in the ear; a learning disability; auditory processing disorder; speech and language delay and/or attention problems. For these children a 0.4 second reverberation time is recommended. Fitting acoustic panels would allow us to achieve this within classrooms.

Our Year R and Year One classrooms already have ceilings that help absorb sound, and installing such ceilings is costly, something our school budget will not support. To carry out such work in our remaining Year Two classes we have been busy making grant applications. I am delighted to inform you that our application to Tesco Bags of Help scheme (using the money raised from the sale of plastic bags) has been accepted.

    We now need your help!

Our ‘Quieter Learning Environments’ project has been selected as one of three projects that will be placed within local Tesco stores for voting. Voting will take place from Tuesday 1st May 2018 to Saturday 30th June 2018. The project with the highest number of votes across our region will receive £4,000, the second placed project £2,000 and the third placed project £1,000. It goes without saying we hope to receive the highest number of votes.

Voting for our project will be available within the following Tesco stores, so please do share our project with friends, family and the wider local community to increase the number of supporters for our project.

    Tesco – Eastleigh (Swan Centre)

    Tesco Express – Fair Oak

    Tesco Express – Chandlers Ford

    Tesco Express - Bishopstoke

Tesco Express – Twyford Road, Eastleigh

Tesco Express – Valley Park, Southampton

To vote, you need to make a purchase within store of any value. You will receive one token per transaction and it's not necessary to purchase a carrier bag in order to receive a token. Please ask for a token if you are not given one and place it within the container labelled Fair Oak Infant School.

Alongside this application we have also made grant applications to other sources, as the Tesco grant alone, if we receive the maximum amount, will not fund the total cost of the project, but, in the words of Tesco themselves ‘every little helps’!

    Thank you for your support.

  • Maypole Dancing

    Fri 04 May 2018

    Learning in School This Week

    Maypole Dancing

On Tuesday morning the sun shone as we danced around the Maypole. This is a traditional dance; people used to attach ribbons around a tree and dance around to celebrate the warmer weather. We learned two dances making a simple plait with the ribbons and the Grand Chain. We all had lots of fun.
